Giving back to those who helped him turn his life around.
Jelly Roll embodies a true rags-to-riches story, turning his life around from being on the street, living a life filled with crime, to an upstanding citizen who pays taxes, raises his children, and also happens to strike gold with his music career, becoming a country music sensation.
Jelly Roll was arrested numerous times in his youth, but his two most notable arrests were in 2002, when he was sentenced to eight years in prison for aggravated robbery. However, he was released just after a year for good behavior. Jelly Roll was arrested again in 2008, where he received an eight-year sentence for a drug charge related to his probation violation. Again, Jelly Roll’s sentence was significantly reduced, and he finished probation in 2016. Jelly Roll credits the birth of his daughter, Bailee Ann, for getting him to turn his life around, and by God, he did just that.
Back in 2024, Jelly Roll visited the cell he served time in at the Metro-Davidson County Detention Facility, leading to an emotional moment in which he admitted he thought this was where he would spend the rest of his days.
“There was a time in my life where I truly thought this was it. And then coming here after getting nominated for two Grammys, it just hits different. I didn’t think I’d get emotional, to be honest, but just this cell…even when I left here, I didn’t have a plan.”
And as he looked around the cell, he pointed out the spot where he spent so much time working on music:
“I wrote hundreds of songs right here.”
Since getting out of jail and turning his life around, Jelly Roll always makes an effort to visit detention centers to offer words of hope to the men and women incarcerated, that they, too, can turn their lives around and become upstanding citizens.
Just before Thanksgiving, Jelly Roll stopped by the prison where he had once been incarcerated to give 300 inmates and staff a holiday meal. Nashville Sheriff Daron Hall shared this news in a social media post.
“During this season, I’d like to give thanks for giving Jelly Roll. Last night, he provided a holiday meal to 300 inmates and staff on the same site where he was once incarcerated.”
In a second post highlighting Jelly Roll’s visit, he added:
“Moments like this show the impact one person can make when they choose to lift others up. Thank you, Jelly Roll, for turning your past into purpose.”
I am sure that the correctional officers loved seeing Jelly Roll after he had turned his life around and focused on his health, losing a significant amount of weight over the last two years. Not to mention, from the brief video shared, the inmates looked like they had a light in their eyes when Jelly Roll walked through that door and spoke words of encouragement.
We really made the right person famous here. Jelly Roll not only walks the walk, but he talks the talk.
