Zac Brown honored the late Dolly Parton with a deeply personal performance of “Butterfly,” bringing the country legend’s recorded vocals back to the stage for a moving musical tribute. The performance took place during a special celebration of Parton’s legacy in Nashville, giving Brown an opportunity to revisit a song that connected him with one of country music’s most beloved figures.
The Zac Brown Band frontman was among the artists who gathered at Belmont University on October 21 for CMA Presents I Will Always Love You: A Celebration of Dolly Parton. With musicians from different generations and genres coming together to celebrate Parton’s influence, Brown chose a song that carried a particularly meaningful connection to the late icon.
Although “Butterfly” was not originally written with Parton in mind, Brown said that looking back, he believes there are no coincidences.
“It means the world to me to be here tonight to honor and perform this song with her one more time,” he shared before the performance.
The Meaning Behind ‘Butterfly’
“Butterfly” appears on the Zac Brown Band’s Love & Fear album. When reflecting on the song’s origins, Brown explained that he wanted to communicate a message of resilience: even when life becomes difficult, remaining true to yourself can help you emerge stronger and more beautiful.
That message took on additional emotional weight during the tribute. The song explores the experience of moving beyond pain, breaking free from a difficult past and finding the strength to become the person you were always meant to be.
The butterfly itself serves as a powerful symbol of transformation and freedom. It represents the journey from feeling trapped or broken toward discovering a renewed sense of possibility.
Those themes also resonated with the evening’s celebration of Parton, whose music and public legacy have touched audiences across generations. Although she was no longer there to sing live, Brown performed alongside her prerecorded vocals, allowing the two artists’ voices to come together once again.
Rather than simply revisiting a previous collaboration, the performance offered Brown a chance to honor the memories he shared with Parton and acknowledge the lasting impact of their time working together.
Zac Brown Reflects on His Special Connection With Dolly

Brown previously spoke with the Country Music Association about the experience of recording music with Parton, describing it as an opportunity he would never forget.
“She’s just so kind and loving,” he recalled.
He also remembered filming their music video together, particularly a moment when he danced with Parton and twirled her around. For Brown, these were the kinds of experiences that felt almost unbelievable at the time and became treasured memories afterward.
His remarks highlighted the personal affection behind the tribute. Beyond Parton’s achievements as a singer and songwriter, Brown remembered her for her warmth and the kindness she showed him.
Ahead of the event, he also expressed how happy he was to be part of an evening that brought so many talented performers together for a shared purpose.
“She was a national treasure and I’m just proud to have known her and proud to be able to be here in support of her legacy,” Brown said.
