The Voice UK semi-finalist Molly J is set to bring her powerful vocals and international musical influences to Middlesbrough’s annual Diwali festival on Saturday, October 31.
The French-Congolese singer will perform at Centre Square as part of the free community celebration, which brings together music, dance, food and cultural activities to mark the Festival of Light.
Molly J has been making a name for herself on ITV’s The Voice UK as a member of Team Tom Jones. A versatile musician, she is a singer, songwriter, pianist, composer and producer whose work combines classical foundations with contemporary sounds and influences from different cultures.
Her appearance at the Middlesbrough event will bring an emerging talent from the television competition to a festival celebrating South Asian culture, highlighting the role of music in connecting people from different backgrounds.
Speaking ahead of the performance, Molly J said she was excited to take part in the celebrations. Having grown up surrounded by different cultures and musical influences, she believes music is one of the most powerful ways to bring people together.
She also described reaching the semi-finals of The Voice UK with Team Tom Jones as an amazing journey, expressing gratitude for opportunities to share her music with new audiences.
For Molly J, the festival’s message of light, hope and togetherness makes the performance particularly meaningful. She said she looked forward to bringing her own energy, culture and sound to the stage and celebrating with the local community.
Event producer Kash Patel also welcomed the singer’s involvement, saying the organisers were delighted to introduce another rising star to the Diwali stage. He expects her performance to bring fresh energy to the event through a blend of classical musical foundations, contemporary sounds and international influences.
Diwali is one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains around the world. Often known as the Festival of Light, the five-day celebration symbolises the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.
In Middlesbrough, the festivities will run from 1pm to 7pm, with BBC Radio Tees DJ Shakk hosting the event. Visitors can look forward to live music and dance performances, street food, children’s activities, market stalls and funfair rides.
The celebrations will conclude with a Bollywood-themed fireworks display, adding a spectacular finale to the family-friendly event.
Organisers have confirmed that entry is free and visitors do not need tickets, making the festival accessible to families and people of all backgrounds.
With Molly J joining the programme, this year’s celebration will offer audiences an opportunity to enjoy a rising television talent alongside the festival’s wider programme of multicultural entertainment.
