What to know about “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen

Originally released in 1984 as part of Leonard Cohen’s album Various Positions, “Hallelujah” is one of the most covered songs of all time. Though Cohen’s original version received little attention at first, the song found new life through countless renditions by artists such as Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, Susan Boyle, K.D. Lang, Jennifer Hudson, Brandi Carlile, and even America’s Got Talent stars like Kodi Lee.

Wainwright’s version, featured on the Shrek soundtrack in 2001, brought the song to a new generation. Following Cohen’s passing in 2016, his version re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 59—proof of the song’s lasting impact.

According to American Songwriter, Cohen wrote nearly 80 verses before deciding on the final lyrics. And how did he feel about so many people covering his work? “I’m very happy that it’s being sung,” he told The Guardian in 2012.
