Julia Roberts has a special place in Emmy Rossum’s family, and her affection for the actress’s children comes with a thoughtful, handmade touch.
During an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show on October 22, Rossum, 40, shared heartwarming details about Roberts, 58, including how the Pretty Woman star has visited her home to play Legos with her children and knitted personalized blankets for them.
Rossum spoke about Roberts’ close relationship with her husband, filmmaker Sam Esmail, 49, who has worked with the Oscar-winning actress on several projects. She described Roberts as kind and down-to-earth, adding that she does not even have an assistant.
The Shameless actress then offered a glimpse into Roberts’ thoughtful side, recalling how the Hollywood star has spent time on the floor playing with her children.
“She has come to my house before and sat on the floor with my kids and done Legos,” Rossum shared. She also revealed that Roberts enjoys knitting and has made individual blankets for the little ones.

Each blanket comes with a personalized label that reads “From the Knitting Needles of Auntie Juju,” a sweet nickname that reflects Roberts’ affectionate role in the family.
Esmail has previously spoken about his friendship with Roberts, telling PEOPLE in 2023 that their relationship initially felt surreal because he had grown up watching her movies. As they became closer, however, he came to know her as a generous and grounded person.
He described Roberts as a giving friend and mother, a quality that aligns with Rossum’s account of her interactions with the children.
Esmail, best known for creating the television series Mr. Robot, has collaborated with Roberts on several projects, including the series Homecoming and Gaslit, as well as the 2023 Netflix thriller ** Leave the World Behind **.
Rossum and Esmail share two children: a daughter born in May 2021 and a son born in April 2023. The couple married in May 2017 after meeting while working on the 2014 romantic comedy Comet, which Esmail wrote and directed and Rossum starred in.
The couple generally keeps their children out of the public eye, though Rossum has occasionally spoken about how motherhood has shaped her outlook.
During a November 2024 appearance on Today, the actress described raising her children as an incredible journey and reflected on the responsibility of preparing them for the world. She emphasized the importance of helping them become confident, independent and comfortable embracing their individuality.
Rossum also said her children have taught her about generosity of spirit, explaining that young children depend on their parents as they grow.
Now, her account of Roberts knitting blankets and spending time playing with the children offers another glimpse into the close personal connections behind the scenes of Hollywood.
