Meghan Markle Makes a Simple Request During MasterChef Australia Debut — ‘Just Call Me Meghan’

Meghan Markle made a memorable appearance on MasterChef Australia, but it wasn’t just her surprise role as a guest judge that got viewers talking. The 44-year-old Duchess of Sussex politely asked to be addressed by her first name, creating one of the episode’s most talked-about moments.

Appearing as the competition’s mystery judge while regular judge Andy Allen is on paternity leave, Meghan was welcomed onto the set by judge Poh Ling Yeow, who greeted her with a warm smile before asking, “Welcome. Do I call you Duchess?”

Meghan’s response was immediate and friendly.

“Oh, call me Meghan. Absolutely, yeah.”

The brief exchange quickly became a standout moment of the episode, which aired on Sunday after weeks of anticipation. Meghan arrived wearing a sophisticated mid-length black linen dress as she joined the judging panel alongside the show’s regular hosts.

Her request also comes after reports that she preferred the focus to remain on her work rather than her royal title. According to the Daily Mail, a source claimed Meghan’s team had specifically asked producers to avoid emphasizing her royal status in promotional material for the show.

Filmed during the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s April visit to Australia, Meghan reflected on the emotional significance of returning to the country, describing the trip as a full-circle experience.

“We’re so excited. We love Australia,” she told contestants. “We had the most sentimental, amazing time. We were here almost eight years ago. We announced we were pregnant with Archie at the time. So, it’s full circle; here we are, but thrilled to be here with all of you and taste some really good food.”

For the challenge, Meghan invited contestants to create a dish “fit for a Duchess” using ingredients she personally selected, including honey, macadamia nuts, citrus, edible flowers, and celeriac. Edible flowers are also featured among the products sold through her lifestyle brand, As Ever.

Throughout the episode, Meghan shared several personal insights, revealing that both of her children enjoy Brussels sprouts and encouraging contestants to “keep a sense of humour” despite the intense pressure of the competition.

She also spoke about the special role food plays in her life, describing cooking as far more than preparing meals.

Food and cooking is really a love language,” Meghan said. “I think it’s such a great way to connect. It’s something that can feel sentimental and meaningful, and it’s how I show my nurturing and love for my friends, family, and my kids.”

Meghan and Prince Harry visited Sydney and Melbourne during their Australian tour earlier this year, focusing on mental health, youth empowerment, and a visit to Melbourne Royal Children’s Hospital. The MasterChef appearance offered another opportunity for Meghan to share her passion for cooking while reconnecting with a country that holds special memories for the couple.
