It’s hard to understate just how much of a force to be reckoned with Chris Stapleton has become throughout his music career. With 12 Grammys, 19 CMA Awards, 11 ACM Awards and a plethora of other hardware from the likes of Billboard, the Americana Music Association, ASCAP and more, the Kentucky native is arguably the biggest and most critically-acclaimed country artist this century.

Among all the awards, last month, Stapleton made history as the only artist to capture a double-diamond song from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) as his cover of David Allan Coe’s “Tennessee Whiskey” officially sold over 20 million units in the U.S.

Despite all the success and being unanimously considered one of the greatest living artists in the genre today, Stapleton has gone on record multiple times recently saying that he has no plans of recording a new album anytime soon. While, of course, it’s been disappointing for fans, it hasn’t stopped the “You Should Probably Leave” singer from hitting the road hard this summer on his All-American Road Show concert series.

This weekend, his stop in Cincinnati, Ohio, at Paycor Stadium proved to be quite the eventful one for Stapleton and Co. With severe weather affecting the area, a major shake-up to the show’s schedule ensued, causing his first opener, Allen Stone, to drop out to make room for Lainey Wilson. After the reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year performed, however, another round of storms hit, causing a nearly two-hour delay before Stapleton finally took to the stage around 10 p.m.

Luckily for fans in attendance, Stapleton put the delay to good use and wrote a brand-new song, which he debuted after finishing the track 10 minutes before stepping out on stage.

Before performing it, he’d call the unreleased song a “special treat” before thanking the crowd for sticking out the long delay.

“We might try a song we wrote about 10 minutes ago. How does that sound? It’s a special treat for you. I’m normally very rehearsed, and I like to rehearse. But I feel like you guys have earned it — nobody left. I certainly appreciate it.”

As for the song itself, which is presumably titled “Waiting On (A Lightning Strike),” it feels like classic Stapleton. Complete with his signature chill-inducing vocal runs and a stellar guitar solo, the track sees the Kentucky native turn the stormy weather into a metaphor for a broken relationship in the chorus.

I’m sitting here wishing I could know
If you’re gonna leave or if you can’t let go
While we’re waiting on, waiting on a lightning strike
I’m just sitting here wishing I could know
If you’re gonna run from the thunder roll
While we’re waiting on, waiting on a lightning strike”

While it’s undoubtedly a stellar song, which would satisfy all the fans who have been desperately waiting for new music over the past few years, it seems pretty unlikely that we will get an official version of the song anytime soon. With that being said, however, it’s nothing short of a must-watch if you’re a big fan of Stapleton.
