A deadly shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, left three children and a teacher dead Thursday, October 15, 2026, after a 16-year-old gunman opened fire inside the school. Authorities said an armed community member intervened and fatally shot the suspect, bringing the attack to an end.
The violence unfolded at Silver Rail Elementary School, turning an ordinary school day into a tragedy that devastated students, families, educators and the wider community.
Teen Suspect Opens Fire at Silver Rail Elementary School
According to Bend Police Department Chief Mike Krantz, the shooting began at approximately 1 p.m. when the suspect allegedly fired a long gun at someone sitting in a parked vehicle. The incident triggered emergency calls as the situation escalated.
The teenager then reportedly approached Silver Rail Elementary School and fired at its locked doors before entering the building and continuing the attack.
Inside the school, the gunman killed three students, aged 5, 8 and 11, along with a teacher, Krantz said during a Thursday evening news conference.

Another student, aged 7, and a 54-year-old teacher were hospitalized in critical condition.
Hundreds of emergency responders rushed to the scene within minutes of receiving reports of gunfire. Police subsequently confirmed that the suspect, who was a resident of Bend, had died after an armed community member intervened.
Officers then began providing medical assistance to the victims and evacuating the school, which serves approximately 400 to 450 students.
Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the attack. Investigators said they expected to provide further updates on Friday as the investigation continued.
Families Reunite With Students After the Attack
Following the shooting, students were evacuated and taken to a designated family reunification location, where relatives waited anxiously to bring them home.
Mindy Corely, whose nephew attends fifth grade at Silver Rail Elementary, told NBC News that the boy was frightened following the incident. Although he had reached the reunification site safely, he was still waiting to see his parents.
During a phone call with his mother, the child reassured her that he was okay but made clear how shaken he had been.
Corely recalled that he was very scared and wanted to go home.
The school shooting also prompted the Bend-La Pine School District to cancel all schools and activities on Friday. Superintendent Steve Cook said crisis counseling would be made available to people affected by the tragedy.
Bend Community Gathers to Mourn the Victims

On Thursday evening, residents gathered at Drake Park for a candlelight vigil honoring the victims. The gathering offered the community an opportunity to grieve together as the scale of the tragedy became clear.
Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler addressed the mourners, describing the shooting as the kind of day every mayor dreads.
Calling it a dark and devastating day, Kebler said the loss would have a profound and lasting impact on the community. She also expressed the difficulty of finding words to describe the lives lost.
The mayor, whose daughter attends another elementary school in Bend, said the tragedy had left the community struggling to make sense of what had happened.
In a separate statement, Kebler emphasized the lasting consequences for children, families, teachers and school employees, saying their lives had been changed forever.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek also attended the vigil, offering condolences and assuring residents that the state would support the community in the days ahead.

Kotek said no parent, family or community should ever have to endure such a day. Recalling her visit to Silver Rail Elementary the previous year, she spoke emotionally about the conversations she had held with parents and her heartbreak for the people affected.
She also praised the courage and quick thinking of school staff, parents and first responders who rushed to help.
Governor Praises Bystander Who Stopped the Gunman
Kotek singled out the armed community member who intervened against the shooter, acknowledging the emotional burden that such an experience could carry.
She thanked the individual for taking action that authorities said prevented further loss of life.
The circumstances surrounding the intervention remain part of the broader investigation, and officials have not released further identifying details about the bystander.
Police Chief Krantz said investigators were committed to conducting a thorough inquiry, while acknowledging that words alone could not ease the community’s pain.
He also noted that Bend police officers had completed active-shooter training at a local high school in August, underscoring the department’s recent preparation for such emergencies.
Despite that training, the attack has left the city confronting a devastating reality.
Officials Promise Support as Investigation Continues
The shooting prompted expressions of concern from state and federal officials, including Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley, who said he was closely monitoring reports from the scene.
Merkley expressed sympathy for students and families affected by the violence, emphasizing that no one should have to fear being attacked at school.
Authorities continued investigating the suspect’s actions and possible motive as the community began the difficult process of mourning the victims.
For Bend, the immediate priorities are supporting grieving families, caring for students and school staff, and assisting investigators and emergency responders.
As officials work to establish what led to the shooting, residents are left remembering the three young students and the teacher who lost their lives, while hoping for the recovery of those critically injured.
