Phil Collins Shares Rare Update: Music Legend Details Recovery Progress and Future Creative Plans

Legendary musician Phil Collins has shared a hopeful update regarding his physical condition, following several years marked by complex medical setbacks.

The 75-year-old star revealed that he is currently feeling stronger than he has for a considerable period. Speaking candidly in a new interview with the BBC ahead of his upcoming induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist later this year, Collins reflected on his recent progress and his creative outlook moving forward.

Overcoming an Extended Period of Physical Challenges

While the past 18 months have brought significant improvement, Collins looked back on a difficult window of time where multiple physical issues happened simultaneously.

  • The Strains of Touring: Decades of high-energy performances took a major physical toll on his joints. Collins explained that he originally performed and toured through persistent knee discomfort for quite some time.
  • Surgical Setbacks: He eventually underwent a knee procedure that had to be repeated five times due to structural issues and localized complications, which kept him physically sidelined for an extended duration.
  • Compounding Factors: In a separate interview from earlier this year, Collins noted that his recovery became further complicated when he contracted COVID-19 while hospitalized, which subsequently impacted his kidney function.

Today, Collins utilizes mobility assistance, such as crutches, and retains a 24-hour live-in nurse to assist with his ongoing routine. “Everything healthwise caught up with me at the same time and whatever could go wrong did go wrong. But everything’s fine now,” Collins stated.

Current Outlook on Stage Performances

Despite intense fan speculation surrounding a potential live appearance, the former Genesis frontman confirmed he has declined an invitation to perform live at his upcoming ceremony. He emphasized that returning to the stage requires peak physical readiness and a rigorous rehearsal schedule that he is reluctant to commit to unless he feels completely capable.

“You can’t just go on stage. You have to rehearse,” Collins explained. “And then by that point, if you’ve not been singing, your voice is going to be shot and then that’s not going to be good. So I’d rather not do it.”

Returning to the Recording Studio

While live touring remains off the table for the foreseeable future, Collins gave followers a reason to look forward, suggesting that he has not entirely ruled out making music again.

The iconic artist—who last released an original solo studio album, Testify, in 2002 and officially stepped away from drumming in 2022 due to physical constraints—revealed that he continues to write ideas down at home. He currently holds a collection of half-formed concepts and a few completed lyrical pieces that he intends to develop in his home studio.

High-Profile Public Appearances

Underscoring his positive turn in health, Collins made a rare public appearance earlier this month. Alongside his ex-wife, Jill Collins, as well as music icon Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster, he attended The King’s Trust 50th Anniversary Party at Buckingham Palace.

Collins holds a deep history with the organization, having originally stepped up as its very first ambassador back in 1986. Jill Collins shared photos of the evening on Instagram, noting that they were deeply honored to spend time with King Charles, who seemed genuinely pleased to reunite with the music legend.
