Princess Diana’s wedding dress remains one of the most unforgettable royal fashion moments in history — but decades later, many still wonder what happened to the legendary gown.

The late Princess of Wales wore the custom ivory silk taffeta dress when she married then-Prince Charles on July 29, 1981, at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Elizabeth Emanuel later recalled that Diana had not decided exactly what she wanted, leading the team to create numerous sketches before finalizing the dramatic design. At the time, the dress was estimated to be worth more than $100,000, with its modern-day value reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars.

What happened after Diana’s death?

After Diana’s tragic death in 1997, the wedding dress was inherited by her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, according to the late royal’s will.

The gown remained under the care of Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, until Harry turned 30. Its current storage location has not been publicly revealed.

The iconic piece returned to public view in 2021, when William and Harry loaned the dress for the “Royal Style in the Making” exhibition at Kensington Palace. The display marked the first time the gown had been shown publicly in nearly 25 years.
