Prince Harry Faces Multi-Million Legal Bill After High-Profile Court Loss

Prince Harry is facing an uncertain wait over the financial consequences of his recent legal defeat.

The Duke of Sussex and other high-profile claimants involved in a case against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL) will not know the final amount they must pay until a judge issues a written ruling next month.

On Thursday, Mr. Justice Nicklin said he would provide his decision in August regarding the size of an initial payment the group must make toward ANL’s legal costs, as well as how the remaining costs will be assessed.

The case has been described by the judge as involving “unprecedented” legal costs for a High Court media law dispute. Associated Newspapers, the publisher of the Daily Mail, is reported to have accumulated more than £34.5 million in legal expenses.

Millions at stake after court defeat

Before the final costs are determined, ANL has requested an interim payment of more than £9.9 million.

However, lawyers representing Prince Harry and the other claimants argued that the requested amount was excessive, suggesting the interim payment should be just over £7.9 million instead.

In written submissions, Nicholas Bacon KC, representing the group, described ANL’s requested payment as “manifestly excessive.”

The judge ruled that the claimants will need to make the interim payment by August 28.

The legal case explained

Prince Harry was one of seven prominent figures who brought claims against ANL, alleging unlawful information gathering by the publisher.

The group included figures such as Elizabeth Hurley, Sir Elton John, and Baroness Doreen Lawrence.

Following an 11-week trial, the claims were dismissed. In his 436-page ruling, Mr. Justice Nicklin concluded that none of the claimants had proven the allegations of unlawful information gathering.

The judge said he accepted evidence given by Prince Harry during the trial in January, but noted that, like the other claimants, Harry had limited evidence regarding some disputed matters.

Harry’s emotional testimony

During the hearing, Prince Harry gave evidence in court in London and spoke about the impact the alleged actions had on his personal life.

The Duke became visibly emotional while testifying on January 21, telling the court that the situation had deeply affected his wife.

“They have made my wife’s life an absolute misery,” Harry said.

He also expressed frustration about having to go through the legal process again, saying the family had wanted an apology and accountability.

“It’s fundamentally wrong to put us through this again when all we wanted was an apology and accountability. It’s a horrible experience,” he said.

Prince Harry responds to verdict

After the case was dismissed earlier in July, Harry released a lengthy statement criticizing the judgment.

“We came to Court seeking justice and accountability. But we have received neither,” he wrote in a statement on July 8.

Harry argued that the decision conflicted with previous legal findings involving other publishers and described the outcome as difficult to understand.

He called the judgment a “complete and obvious whitewash”, while also criticizing what he described as the court’s decision to dismiss evidence presented during the case.

As the legal process moves forward, Prince Harry and the other claimants now await the judge’s decision on the financial impact of the case.
